Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival 2013

This Saturday was awesome! My friends and I attended the Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival in Gainesville, GA. The event consisted of different schools and organizations racing in large "Dragon Boats." Each boat seated 20 people and had a leader in the front who would beat the drum and a person in the back who would steer the boat. There were large dragon heads at the ends of each boat. We all go these really nice T-shirts that said "Paddling to Glory" as our uniform. We all had to meet up at the front loop on campus at 4:45 am. Almost all of us immediately fell asleep on the bus. The Center for Student Engagement at Agnes Scott organized the event and provided the shirts and breakfast for us. When we got to Lake Lanier, I was so amazed at how beautiful everything looked. The water was glistening as the sun rose and the air was so clean. My friends and I were taking photos the whole morning. The team then met up at the stands and started stratagizing. We all practiced our paddling stroke and got in an order that would best fit the boat. I really liked the cool life jackets that we had to wear. Soon we competed in two races. In between the races we were able to explore through the festival. There were many vendors that were giving away free items like school supplies, reusable bottles, and hair accessories, and so much more. We also had the chance to eat some traditional Asian food. From the race I learned a lot about teamwork. We all had to work together and try to give and take while racing. Some people were louder and much stronger than others but in the end we were there to have fun and row some boats! I believe that the event was a great way for us to bond with each other and meet other students at Agnes Scott College.

Until next time,

-Miss Peach xoxo
